Brennan's 8th Grade Year 2011-2012

This was Brennan's last year of middle school, and it was a great one! She was busier than she has ever been before and handled so many extracurricular activities with grace. She started the year playing field hockey for her fall sport. She did a great job, especially considering that her only experience with field hockey prior to this season was a summer camp at Laurel three years ago.

This is a huge project she completed for her summer reading assignment, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Practicing the viola before an audition...

Brennan competed in a forensics competition at Norfolk Collegiate School involving five independent schools from Hampton Roads.  She won first place in storytelling!  The first place winners performed their pieces for the parents.  I love the pic below of her performance!

The fall middle school play was The Phantom Toll Booth.  Brennan played Princess Reason.

Brennan auditioned for the spring upper school musical and got a speaking part - which is a pretty big deal for a middle schooler!  She played Cindy Watkins in Hairspray.

Her spring sport was softball.  She loves softball and is pretty good at it.  Her main position was third base.

After every game, the two competing teams gather on the field and do a "cheer" of encouragement together.

I know I've already mentioned this here in a post of its own, but I'm including it here also as it's a major part of Brennan's 8th grade year.  She was awarded the Moomaw Scholarship award at the 8th grade awards ceremony.  This award is voted on by the faculty and is awarded to a student who "demonstrates intellectual ability, extracurricular involvement, and civility."  This is what the head of the middle school said about Brennan while she stood on stage to receive her award -
"New to __________ last year in the 7th grade, Brennan is a smart and hard working young lady who consistently demonstrates maturity both in and out the classroom.  In addition to her intellectual ability, Brennan is a wonderful actress, participating not only in the Middle School play and the Upper School Musical, but also sharing her talents in the 7th and 8th Grade Forensics competition in the Girls Storytelling category.  Prior to the end of the school year, Brennan and another of her classmates spearheaded a collection for the "Pennies for Peace" program which seeks to sponsor the educational efforts of the Central Asian Instutute.  Brennan never seeks attention for her good deeds or accomplishments, and we want her to know that they are recognized by everyone around her.  By virtue of her outstanding academic accomplishments, extracurricular involvement, and active citizenship Brennan is a very deservng recipient of this year's Moomaw Scholarship."

Holocaust project for social studies...

Brennan was selected to perform in the Virginia Beach All-City Orchestra.  This was taken outside the Sandler Center after the concert.
In addition to her extracurricular activities, Brennan maintained a 4.0 for the year in advanced classes.  She also babysat whenever she could.  She pushed herself hard in the 8th grade and her hard work certainly paid off!
